Scientists have been researching what “beauty” is for a long time. We have known for some time that symmetry, smoothness, and “average” features play a large role in what we humans determine to be beautiful. The theory is that we are attracted to mate with others who show the least amount of flaws indicating their superior genetic makeup. This website lets you combine multiple faces to create a beautiful average of your liking. It’s a little like playing perverted Frankenstein and it is a bit addictive.

Two Australians at the University of Technology Sydney have invented a software program that distinguishes a beautiful face from a less attractive one.
Their invention uses facial measurements, related to ratios and images of models, actors and some 200 women from around the world.
After a photograph of a woman’s face is put into the program, it returns a beauty rating of between one and 10.
University of Technology Sydney computer scientists Hatice Gunes and Massimo Piccardi believe the software could be used in fields such as cosmetic surgery.

i think this is discusting. What ever happend to beautiful people. Good people. has it gotten to the point where we can uses technology to discriminate what is and what is ot beautiful. If my left eye isnt the perfect distance from my right am i really condemed to live the rest of my life beleiveing i am ugly. This is an apauling way of measuring beauty, surely apperance is much more than just a face.
What happened to beautiful people? Nothing. But a beautiful character doesn’t equate to physical beauty, Katie. (You’ve probably heard somewhere that this is why it’s not right to judge someone by their appearance, as opposed to their character.) It’s physical beauty that is being quantified here.
If you’re left eye isn’t the perfect disance from the right, it doesn’t mean your condemed to being ugly, unless the distance is really off. No, it just means your condemed to being less than perfect looking, strikingly attractice, a 10 super model. The better the mathematics and proportions, the prettier you are. It’s not complicated.
You’re right that physical beauty is more than a face. There are body proportions to be considered as well. Now you’re thinking like a reasonable scientist!
What is “perfection”? Even the most beautiful people get old. Look at beauties like Marilyn Monroe, Eva Gardner, Bridgette Bardot… gorgeous sexpot women, two of them now decomposing, the other in her 70’s. Paulina Porizkova, once considered an incredible beaut in the ’80s is now in her 40’s and not quite the gorgeous girl she once was. Physical beauty is fleeting. People have told me that I was “the prettiest girl I have ever seen,” “strikingly beautiful,” etc on many occasions, even literally being stopped in the street to be told how “beautiful” people think I am. However, I always had smarts enough to know it would not last. Thus i cultivated so much more: relationshps, my personality, my mind. I still have people complimenting me, and I am now working on my 3rd degree, my PhD. I know what i really important in life! And Katie, my eyes are not equally apart in distance from my nose, and am still called “drop dead gorgeous,” so millimeterage really does not matter anyway.
Haha, that’s really interesting! As far as people finding this disgusting or appaling: Don’t take it too seriously. The fact is, people will always find certain standards or appearances more attractive than others, but if you let it get you down or obsess over how “awful” or “unfair” it is, you’ll lose sight of what really makes a person outstanding: Confidence. Don’t worry that some people find ‘thin’ attractive or supermodels gorgeous, those people probably have no effect on your life or happiness, as the ones you’re close to will love you for who you are anyway!
